
Letterboxing @ Shelter Rock Public Library
Letterboxing is a treasure hunt game for children and their families. All participants need to do is have a personal stamp of their choosing, a notepad and an inquisitive mind. A letterbox is hidden somewhere inside the Shelter Rock Public Library. Follow the clues below to try and find it. Happy searching!!!
Clue #1
In the Children’s Department locate the plaque dedicated to Florence Friedlander near the Story Hour Room. Ms. Friedlander was the first children’s librarian to become Head of Children’s Services. To find out how long she worked at the library subtract the years of service inscribed on the plaque.

Clue #2
Locate the book The Newbery and Caldecott Medal Books, 1986-2000 by using the online card catalog or asking a children’s librarian. Add the number 117 to the number you obtained from Clue #1. Then turn to that page number in the book. Identify the author with the initials J. S. who won the Newbery Award.

Books come in many formats. What format requires you to use earplugs and a battery to listen to a book? Hint: The Newbery Award winner from Clue #2 has a book in this format.

Congratulations!!! You have found the letterbox
Take the letterbox to a table and carefully open it. Inside you will find a notepad, a stamp, an inkpad, and a pencil. Stamp your notepad using the stamp inside the letterbox and write any comments in your notepad. Then, turn to the next blank page in our notepad and stamp the library’s notepad using your stamp. When you are done please place all of the items back into the letterbox and return it to the exact location where you found it.
